Introduction

Designed for two-palletwide operations, the swapbody units' increased internal width allows two pallets (up to a maximum of 1200mm wide) to be loaded side by side. Intermodal operators using these units can now compete with truckers who, until the introduction of two palletwide boxes, had an advantage over operators using 8ft-wide containers.

Once the legs are extended, the vehicle is then free from the unit and is able to be driven away with the swapbody left in place for loading and unloading. For shippers of break bulk cargo not currently using pallets, these units offer an increase in cubic capacity and a significant advantage over standard 8ft containers. As a rough guide, there is a minimum of 3.6% extra cubic capacity when comparing units of a similar size representing an additional freight ton per 20ft of length.

Until SeaCell came on to the market, palletwide containers were generally restricted to regional use, as it proved operationally impractical to operate two-palletwide containers deepsea. SeaCell's unique design has overcome all of these difficulties and two-palletwide containers can now be used worldwide without a problem. Using existing infrastructure the units can be stowed in cellguides and on close deck fittings as any standard ISO container.
